Are you ready to wave and pay?

In the next coming weeks, using a Discover credit card to swipe for your groceries may not be necessary anymore if you have a Blackberry, iPhone or another type of smartphone. A “super-secret” alliance of wireless carriers including Verizon and AT&T have recently begun putting their heads together with banking giant, Barclays, to make contactless mobile transactions possible.

Bloomberg News recently confirmed this new technology with information from three people who have direct knowledge of what exactly the plan entails. According to these sources, the program will start in Atlanta, Georgia along with just three other unnamed cities.

Having already launched in countries such as Japan and Turkey, this technology is not an original idea. However, the plan underway in the US has the potential to be the largest effort by carriers to develop this form of mobile transaction. To use this new means of payment, one simply needs to wave their Discover card in front of their smartphone. The rest of a customer’s transaction will be processed through Discover’s payment network.

Mark Siegel, AT&T spokesman, stated “Mobile payments are the logical step for consumers.”

Will the rest of the American population agree with him? Only time will tell!
